Unit 1, Key Words 2 - Mixing Dissolving & Separating Flashcards
Solvent
The liquid in which something dissolves
Solution
A mixture formed when a solid dissolves in a liquid
Soluble
Able to dissolve (sometimes in water)
Solute
A solid that dissolves
Filter
A material with microscopic holes used to remove insoluble solids from liquids
Filtration
The separation of solid from a liquid using a filter funnel and filter paper
Insoluble
Unable to dissolve
Immiscible
Liquids that do not mix but form separate layers
Solubility
The mass of solute that dissolves in a solvent at a particular temperature
Crystallisation
When a solvent evaporates to leave crystals of solid
Crystal
A solid having a regular structure
Saturated
A solution in which no further solid will dissolve
Salt
Salt, in chemistry, substance produced by the reaction of an acid with a base. A salt consists of the positive ion (cation) of a base and the negative ion (anion) of an acid.
Salt is also used to refer to sodium chloride, commonly known as table salt.
Evaporate
Process by which surface particles of a liquid vaporise to become a gas
Rock salt
Natural mixture of salt and insoluble minerals like clay used to ice roads in the winter
Brine
Salty water
Vapour
A liquid that has evaporated
Condense
To turn from a gas into a liquid e.g. water vapour condensing to liquid water
Distillation
The process for separating liquids by evaporating them then condensing the vapours
Liebig condenser
The apparatus used for distillation
Purify
To make pure or nearer to pure where only one type of element or compound is present
