Unit 3- Energy Flashcards
Potential energy-
Kinetic energy-
PE+KE= ?
Potential- stored
Kinetic- motion
PE+KE= total/mechanical energy
Nonrenewable energy vs renewable
Electricity doesn’t belong to either.. why?
Nonrenewable- cannot be replenished in a short time
Renewable- can be replenished in a short time
Electricity is a secondary energy source- has to use another energy source to make it
How are heat and temperature DIFFERENT
Heat- a measurement of total/mechanical energy in a substance
Temperature- a number related to the average KE of the molecules of a substance
Law of conservation of energy:
Energy cannot be created nor destroyed, but only changed from one measure of storage into another or transferred from one object to another
Endothermic
1) energy is absorbed b the system from the surroundings
2) loss of energy»temp decreases
3)particles/ions absorb energy from surroundings when rearranging
Exothermic
1)energy is released from system to the surrounding
2)temp goes up»feels hot
3)release energy to surrounding as particles/ions rearrange
Phase changes on an expo/endo graph
2) 334J/g- fusion/freezing or melting
4) 2260- vaporization/condensation
PE goes up, no temp or KE change
Q=HM
Slope lines on an eco/endo graph
KE, temperature, speed, thermal all go up
1) 2.11- solid water
3) 4.184- liquid water
5) 2.00- gaseous water
Q=mc^T (F-i)
The higher the specific heat, the more/less it resists temp change
More
How does heat flow
From hot to cold until equilibrium is obtained
- final temp is always the same
LOL charts
-only one change at a time
Hot Gas
—- —-
—. Liquid.
Cold Solid
-chemical is always at two
