Semester Packet Flashcards
Qualitative observations
Properties/ characteristics (color,textures,appearance)
Quantitative observations
Measurements, has units (temperature,mass,volume)
X axis, Y axis
Independent or dependent
X- independent
Y- dependent
What is absolute zero
No particular movement
Theoretical temperature
0K/-273C
Which state of matter has the least density
Gas, since it moves most freely
Electron, proton, neutron
Mass & charge
E- mass: 0 Charge: -1
P+ mass:1 Charge: +1
No mass:1 Charge: 0
The mass of a proton = the mass of a ___
Mass of proton= mass of neutron (1)
What is the difference between the nuclear reactions taking place in the sun and the nuclear reactions taking place in a nuclear reactor?
Fusion: high pressure and temp fuses (2H atoms —> He)
Fission: unstable isotope of Uranium is bombarded w/ neutrons and split releasing more neutrons in a chain reaction
(Nuclear reactions in the sun is fusion, fission is splitting)
Describe the process of fission
Unstable nucleus is hit w/ a fast moving neutron —> nucleus splits—> releases more neutrons and lots of energy
Fusion reactions produce enormous amounts of energy. Why is fusion not used to generate electrical power?
Would not consume more energy than it would give off. Due to high temperature, pressure required it is not feasible to se in nuclear power
What is energy
Energy is like information, it is not tangible but can be stored and transferred to different objects
What is a photon? How is a photon emitted from an atom?
A particle of light energy. It’s emitted what an electron moves back down from a different level of energy.
Why did Mendeleev leave spaces on his periodic table?
He expected more elements to be discovered/founded/created
