who are lay people
A
they are people who have no expertise and are considered to be the general public

who are Juries
A
12-15 people who hear evidence and argments for a case, they decide the guilty or not guilty verdict

who are magistrates
A
they are unpaid part-time volunteers who are members of their local comunity, they use a clerk to give them legal advice.

two strengths of Juries
A
- they arent bound by the law (jury equity)
- they only sit for 2 weeks so they are less likely to become case hardened
- their deliberation is in secret so they are more likely to be honest
- they are democratic and can relate to the circumstances of the case

two weaknesses of juries
A
- prone to bias
- media can influence them easily
- some trials can be too hard to understand
