Diversion Programs
A
- Cost less than imprisonment
- Prevent the accused from socializing w/ other convicts
- Allow accused to repay society in a meaningful way

Absolute Discharge
A
- Offender is found guilty
- Conviction is recorded
- Offender is free to go w/out conditions

Conditional Discharge
A
- Offender is found guilty
- NO conviction recorded
- Offender is free to go… BUT must meet certain expectations (probation orders) to avoid a criminal record

Restitution/Compensation
A
Smith given to make amends for a loss (eg. damages to an injured party)

Suspensions
A
A sentence that removes a privilege, such as driving or attending school

Community Service Order
A
A sentencing option which the Judge demands the offender does some specific work in the community. Under supervision.

Probation
A
- A sentence that allows offender provincial freedom rather than imprisonment
- Requires good behaviour + other conditions the Judge imposes
- Common for 1st time

Deportation
A
- To be expelled to one’s country of origin
- Common if someone is declared an illegal immigrant

Fines
A
- If the penalty for an offence is 5 yrs or less, the offender may sometimes pay a monetary fine instead of going to prison
- Judge establishes amount

Imprisonment
A
- Sentence is 30 days or less - local detention centre
- Sentence is 30+ days, but less than 2 yrs - provincial prison or reformatory
- Sentence is 2 yrs or more - federal institution – penitentiary
