Population distribution
How spread out a population is in any given area
Demography
The statistical study of human populations
Push/pull factors
Push factors “push” people away from their home and include things like war and pull factors “pull” people to a new home and include things like better opportunities
Refugee
People who must leave their home area for their own safety or survival because of war, oppression, or natural disasters
Dependency load
How many people in a county are not of working age compared with those of working age
Doubling time
The number of years it takes for a population to double in size at the current rate of population growth
Periods of high and low immigration
How many immigrants settling into a country within a time period
Where do most of our immigrants come from?
India, China, and Afghanistan
Point based immigration system
A system that countries use to determine whether or not someone is able to add on to their economic structure (education level, wealth, connection with the country, language fluency, existing job offer, or others) and therefore enter their country
Population pyramid
The graphical illustration of the distribution of a population by age groups and sex
Birth/death rate
The annual number of births per 1,000 total population and the annual number of deaths per 1,000 total population
Immigrant classes
Economic immigrant, family sponsored immigrant, refugee, and other immigrant
Levels of development
Developed, developing, and undeveloped countries
Demographic transition model
A model that changes in a country’s population and is a generalised description of the changing pattern of mortality, fertility and growth rates as societies move from one demographic regime to another
Development key terms
Literacy rate, GDP, and infant mortality
