Unit #2 - Resources and Industries Flashcards
Sustained yield management
Maintaining continuous production on all our lands that are economically and environmentally suited for timber production
Waste diversion (3 R’s)
Reduce, reuse, and recycle
Renewable vs. nonrenewable resources
Renewable resources can naturally replenish themselves while nonrenewable resources cannot
Aquacultre
Breeding, raising, and harvesting fish, shellfish, and aquatic plants on farms floating on water
Groundwater
Water that is stored underground in saturated zones beneath the ground
Intensive vs. extensive farming
Intensive farming focuses on investing a lot of resources and labor into small tracts of land in order to increase yield and extensive farming employs larger tracts of land and lower quantities of labor and resources
Clear vs. selective cutting
Clear-cutting is the removal of all or nearly all trees in the stand and in selective harvest logging, most trees remain
inshore vs. offshore fishery
Inshore fisheries remains closer to the shore in smaller vessels and offshore fisheries brings fishermen far and wide in large fishing vessels for long periods of time
Grand banks
Underwater plateaus that rise from the North American continental shelf and are one of the world’s richest fishing grounds
Reasons for the collapse of the East Coast Fisheries
Overfishing, destructive fishing practices, and changes in natural conditions
Alternative energy
Wind power, geothermal energy, solar energy, hydropower, nuclear energy, and biomass
Fossil fuels
A nonrenewable resource that is made from decomposing plants and animals that were compressed under the Earth’s crust for millions of years
Flow resource
(Water, wind, and sunlight) Resources that must be used when and where they occur because they are neither renewable nor nonrenewable and are location influenced
Oil/tar sands
Loose sands or sandstone that is saturated with bitumen that is mainly found in Alberta, Canada
Fracking
The process of injecting pressurized liquid into underground formations to force them to open further to extract oil or gas
