Unit #1 - Interactions with the Physical Environment Flashcards
Plate tectonics
(Large pieces of the Earth’s crust that constantly shift against each other) pacific plate, Nazca plate, Cocos plate, North American plate, Caribbean plate, South American plate, Scotia plate, African plate, Arabian plate, Indian plate, Eurasian plate, Antarctic plate, Australian plate, and Philippine plate
Landform regions of Canada (characteristics)
Mountains, hills, plateaus, and plains
Maritime climate
Climates influenced by their closeness to a sea or ocean
Continental climate
Climates characterized by hot summers, cold winters, and little rainfall (typical of the interior of a continent)
Climate graph
A graph that displays the yearly temperature and precipitation statistics for a particular region
Temperature range
The difference between the maximum and minimum temperatures during a specified time interval (daily, monthly, or seasonal)
The Rock Cycle
The process of how each of the three major rock types form and break down from different applications of heat and pressure over time
LOWERN (Factors affecting climate)
(Factors that affect/influence climate) Latitude, Ocean currents, Winds, Elevation, Relief, and Nearness to water
Vegetation regions (characteristics)
Forest, grassland, tundra, desert, and ice sheets
Parts of soil
Minerals, soil organic matter, living organisms, gas, and water
Coniferous vs. Deciduous Trees
Coniferous trees bear cones and have needles or scales that do not fall off in the winter and deciduous trees have leaves that fall off yearly
Types of maps
Political maps, physical maps, road maps, topographic maps, time zone maps, geologic maps, and zip code maps
Parts of a map
Title, Scale, Legend, Compass, and Latitude and Longitude
Windward and leeward
Where one side of a mountain becomes wet from rain and the other side stays dry
