Unit 3: Cellular Energetics Flashcards
What is metabolism?
All of the biochemical reactions of an organism.
What is a Catabolic reaction?
A reaction that releases energy via splitting a molecule into smaller parts.
Exothermic
What are anabolic reactions?
Reactions that consume energy to build something.
Endothermic
What is the first law of thermodynamics?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed
What is the second law of thermodynamics?
Every energy transfer increases the entropy of the universe.
What is an enzyme?
Proteins that act as biological catalysts.
What is the active site of an enzyme?
Where the substrate goes and products come out.
What is the substrate of an enzyme?
What the enzymes does something to.
What are the products of an enzyme reaction?
What comes out
What is a competitive inhibitor?
Something that fits into the active site of an enzyme instead of what is needed or wanted there.
What is an allosteric inhibitor?
An inhibitor that binds to part of the enzyme and makes its active site useless.
What is ATP short for?
Adenosine triphosphate
