Unit 2: Cell Structure & Function Flashcards
Cytoplasm
The goo and everything in it inside a cell
Cytosol
The goo in a cell
Cell/plasma membrane
A selectively permeable lipid bilayer around the cell.
Nucleus
The nuclear membrane and everything inside of it.
Nucleolus
Structure inside the nucleus that contains DNA.
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Storage organelle that also produces lipids and steroids. It also detoxifys the cell and transfers things around.
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Protein manufacturing
Mitochondria
ATP synthesis
Chloroplast
Photosynthesis
Ribosomes
Make amino acids.
Golgi Apparatus
Packaging, transporting and modifying proteins and lipids.
Cytoskeleton
A network of filaments around the cell used for support
Centriole
Makes spindle fibers
Vacuoles
Storage bubbles found in cells
Lysosomes
Little stomachs that the cell uses to attack invaders and digest useless stuff in the cell.
Vesicle
A small sphere of fluid surrounded by a lipid bilayer.
What is the extra cellular matrix
Loose mesh of fibers like collagen
What does it mean that the cell membrane is semi permeable
It allows some things to pass through but not others.
Phospholipids are amphipathic. What does this mean?
They have hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions.
What does cholesterol do for the cell membrane?
It resists changes is membrane fluidity due to temperature changes.
What do transmembrane proteins do?
They provide channels through which chemicals can flow.
What do membrane bound enzymes do?
They assist is enzymatic reactions.
What do receptors in the cell membrane do?
They receive signal molecules.
What do binding proteins do?
They connect or bind cells.
