What was the effect of the French and indian war on Britain?

A

The French and Indian War as a turning point in the relationship between Britain and her colonies. The British moved away from Salutary Neglect to more restrictive policies after the war (the colonists were loyal and fought along-side the British).

Some things that happened during this timline

A

Grievances of the colonists such as the Proclamation of 1763, taxes such as the Stamp Act, military occupation (quartering of soldiers), and the overall denial of rights of British subjects (for example, writs of assistance and admiralty courts). Note, these British policies caused the colonists to join together. Examples: Stamp Act Congress, Committees of Correspondence, non-importation agreements/boycotts, Sons of Liberty, Daughters of Liberty, etc.

What were some oppressed groups?

A
  • Perception of women (Mothers of the Republic, which means nurture their sons to become virtuous leaders of the new republic)
  • People of color were still enslaved after the Declaration was written and the new government was formed under the Constitution. States in the north began passing gradual emancipation laws and some enslaved people were freed in the wills of plantation owners. Also, some enslaved people gained their freedom by serving in the military.
  • Native-Americans had to compete with encroaching Americans onto their land in the Ohio Valley. Natives organized the WEstern Confederacy to defend their land.

What is the role of democracy and republicanism in our government?

A

The role of democracy and republicanism in shaping our government. Local control with new state governments which guaranteed personal liberties. Eventually, a central government that will represent the states and the people.
