How did it effect native Americans?
Altered Native cultures by introducing Christianity, weapons, horses and other livestock. Diseases such as Smallpox had a devastating effect on native peoples.

How did the columbian exchange impact European colonists?
Impact Europeans extracted a great deal of resources from the Americas including: agricultural products like sugar, gold, and silver. European nations competed for these resources. As a result we will see a commercial economy developing in Europe. The food, such as potatoes, that came from the Americas helped sustain larger populations.

Human capital was extracted from Africa. These enslaved people served as labor to extract the wealth from the Americas.

Native Background
Natives had societies and cultures of their own, often based on geography, prior to contact. Understand the different perceptions of natives by Spaniards such as De Las Casas and Sepulveda. Las Casas represented a kinder view toward natives. However, both views emphasized Christians’ superiority.

What was the encpmienda system and how were Natives effected?
Spanish use of the Encomienda System: This system exploited Natives for their labor in exchange for protection and Christian education. Native culture was not respected.
Natives did resist colonization, for example, The Pueblo Revolt/Pope’s uprising which occurred in the Southwest.
