How did different colonists treat Native Americans?
- French and Dutch traded with Natives for resources like beaver pelts. Alliances were formed.
- Spanish initially exploited under the encomienda system and over time created a mestizos culture.
- The British formed permanent agricultural communities that continually pushed Natives further west off of their land.

What were indentured servants and what replaced it during this time?
Indentured servants were the early labor source in the British colonies. Slavery took over as the main source of labor at the end of the 17th century (more competition in the slave trade and unrest amongst white servants i.e. Bacon’s Rebellion). Note, although slavery was concentrated in the south all thirteen colonies used enslaved labor.

What was Bacon’s rebellion and when did it happen?
Bacon’s Rebellion in Virginia was the first popular uprising in the American colonies. It was long viewed as an early revolt against English tyranny, which culminated in the war for independence one hundred years later. Took place in virginia 1675-1676.

What were the conflicts between Natives and Europeans?
There was frequent conflict between Europeans and natives over territory and resources: Pueblo Revolt (southwest against Spanish rule and disrespect of their culture 1680), Beaver Wars (mainly fought in the Great Lakes region between French and Dutch native allies) over the valuable resource beaver pelts, Powhatan Wars (Virginia during the first half of the 17th century fighting over resources and encroachment on native lands), and King Philip’s War (Massachusetts during the 1670s )).

What acts were passed by england and what did they regulate during this time period?
Mercantilism/Navigation Acts were passed by England to regulate the transAtlantic trade(Remember the goal is to export more than you import and to build up your wealth).

What was salutary neglect?
Salutary Neglect, which was a lax enforcement of British rule, in the first half of the 18th century and its impact on shaping the colonists views on government and economy (while the cat is away the mice will play).

What was the enlightenment, when did it happen, and what was its effect?
The enlightenment and its influence on colonist’s thought (especially natural rights and consent of the governed-self rule/social contract), lasted from 1685- 1815.

What was the Great awakening?
The Great Awakening, the religious revival during the mid 18th century (know George Whitefield and Jonathan Edwards). Know protestant evangelicalism, religious diversity, and promoting education, created colleges to teach new theologies. (Reflect on the trans-Atlantic influences on the Enlightenment and Great Awakening, consider print media)
