Q

What are the disadvantages of using Accelerometers (objective) to assess physical activity?

A
  • expensive for large populations ($250-$3000)
  • can alt physical activity behaviour (reactivity)
  • not sensitive to low impact physical activity thus can underestimate activities that are predominantly upper body

Q

What are the advantages of using Accelerometers (objective) to assess physical activity?

A
  • can assess sedentary/low intensity physical activity
  • can estimate time spent in MVPA
  • small, lightweight, non-invasive compared to heart rate monitors
  • assess dimensions, intensity, frequency and duration

Q

What is the difference between uniaxial and biaxial/triaxial accelerometers?

A

A uniaxial accelerometer measures motion in a single plane while a biaxial or triaxial accelerometer monitors multiple planes

Q

What are the advantages of using Pedemoters (objective) to assess physical activity?

A
  • inexpensive
  • small, lightweight, non-invasive
  • easy to administer to large groups

Q

What are the disadvantages of using Pedemoters (objective) to assess physical activity?

A
  • assess only one type of physical activity (walking or running)
  • cannot record or store data in real time
  • can’t record magnitude of movement
  • can provide an estimate of energy expenditure however this data is based on adults and is unsuitable to apply to children

Q

What are the advantages of using direct observation (objective) to assess physical activity?

A
  • excellent qualitative and quantitative data
  • collection of contextual information
  • computer software data collection and analysis is simpler

Q

What are the disadvantages of using direct observation (objective) to assess physical activity?

A
  • difficult to use with large populations
  • intrusive
  • labour intensive and time consuming
  • presence of observer or camera can result in bias behaviour of participants (reactivity)

Q

What are the advantages of using recall surveys (subjective) to assess physical activity?

A
  • assesses physical activity across multiple domains including leisure, household, Active transport and occupation

Q

What are the disadvantages of using recall surveys (subjective) to assess physical activity?

A
  • social desirability bias (over-exaggerating the truth to look better)
  • children under 10 and some elderly people have limited capacity to recall specific details accurately due to cognitive limitations

Q

What are the advantages of using diaries (subjective) to assess physical activity?

A
  • capture qualitative and quantitative data
  • cost effective for large scale studies
  • low burden on participant
  • administered quickly and easily

Q

What are the disadvantages of using diaries (subjective) to assess physical activity?

A
  • unsuitable for kids under 10 due to cognitive limitations
  • validity problems associated with social desirability bias, memory limitations and misinterpretation of physical activity
  • some elderly people have cognitive limitations

Q

National Physical Activity Guidelines:

What are the NPAG’s for children 0-5 years?

A

Physical:

  • infants 0-1 years should engage in floor based Olay
  • toddlers 1-3 years and preschoolers 3-5 years should be physically active for 3 hours spread throughout the day

Sedentary:

  • kids under 2 should watch no television or electronic media
  • infants, toddlers, preschoolers must not be sedentary or inactive for more than an hour at a time (except for sleeping)

Q

National Physical Activity Guidelines:

What are the NPAG’s for older adults 18-65 years?

A

Physical:

  • incorporate fitness, strength, balance and flexibility
  • 30 minutes of MVPA most (5) preferably all days
  • those just starting or have stopped physical activity start at an easily manageable level and build up to the recommended amount
  • cater physical activity to individuals capability (age)

Q

National Physical Activity Guidelines:

What are the NPAG’s for overweight or obese children and youth?

A

Physical:

  • more physical activity than is currently being engaged in
  • prescription based on age-appropriate activity
16
Q

National Physical Activity Guidelines:

What are the NPAG’s for overweight or obese adults?

A

Physical:

  • 60 minutes of physical activity per day
  • once weight is lost accumulate 60-90 minutes if activity oer day to avoid weight regain
