Unit 3 (AOS1 outcome 1) Monitoring and Promoting PA- Chapter 2 Flashcards
What does the social ecological model do?
It helps us understand facilitators and barriers to being active
What is the social ecological model?
The social ecological model recognises that there are many levels of influence in participation In physical activity, from what goes on in people’s minds (individual motivation) to social networks and influences (family and peers), to the physical environment (presence of a nearby park) and policy environments (walking meeting)
What are some barriers to physical activity?
- time
- socioeconomic status (SES)
- motivation
- attitude
- physical location
- injury or disability
- culture or religious beliefs
- environmental (facilities available)
What are individual factors of the social ecological model?
- knowledge
- behaviours
- attitudes

- access to facilities (tracks, parks, sporting fields)
- natural factors such as weather or geography
- is it an aesthetically pleasing environment?
- workplaces, classrooms, family homes and theatres discourage physical activity by restricting or prohibiting it acting as a negative barrier
- sports fields, bike paths, pools, gyms designed for PA meaning they’re a positive facilitator of PA
- natural/ built environment influences amount/ type of PA and this can be positive (facilitator) or negative (barrier) or PA
- community design (density of housing/ land use)
