What is hard power?
The ability to influence others through force or coercion
What is Idealism?
The idea that decision-making should be on morality and what is right?
What is National Interest?
The interest of the state
What is power?
The means, strength or capacity of a global actor to influence the behaviour of other global actors
What is Pragmatism?
The idea that decision-making should be based on the likely success of a course of action
What is security?
To be free from harm
What is soft power?
The ability to influence others through cultural or ideological attraction
What is sovereignty?
The concept which establishes the state as the legitimate authority within it boundaries
What is Bilateralism?
When two states agree to work together
What is diplomacy?
Managing relations between states
What is foreign aid?
When one state provides resources (economic, humanitarian, or military) to another state. Aid is usually given by wealthier states to poorer states
What is foreign direct investment?
An investment made by company in one state business interests in another state, in the form of either establishing business operations or acquiring business assets in other states
What is a foreign policy instrument?
Tools used by the state in relations with global actors outside of its borders in pursuit of its own national interest
What is militarisation?
The process of developing one’s armed forces
What is Multilateralism?
When three or more states agree to work together
What is military power?
The use of threat of violence to achieve a state’s national interest
What is regional security?
to the measures taken by states or organisations within a particular geographical region to ensure the safety and stability of the area. Including military alliance, diplomatic agreements and economic cooperation
What is regionalism?
Describes the emergence of large regions as political and economic units which facilitate cooperation

What is economic power?
An actor’s capacity to generate wealth by being in a position to tax, produce and trade
What is Political Power?
The state’s political system and how that affects governments exercising power domestically.
Political authority rules over a state
What is Diplomatic Power?
The state’s ability to conduct negotiations and agreements with other states, usually through official representatives
What is Cultural Power?
The state’s ‘brand’.
Cultural values and national characteristics as a ‘product’.
State’s ability to ‘win over’ other states to encourage cooperation.
State’s image of itself to promote abroad. (REPUTATION)
