Unit 3 Flashcards
Name 9 input devices
- Keyboard
- Mouse
- Tracker pad
- Joystick
- Touch screen
- Microphone
- Scanner
- Digital Camera
- Graphics digitizer
What are concept Keyboards
Concert keyboards have keys with pictures or words and ar used to carry out specific instructions
Name one use of a joystick
It is used to play computer games
Where can a touch screen be used
- Banks
- Museums
- Supermarkets
4 features of a keyboard
- Used a standard layout, QWERTY
- Depends on the human operator for speed of input
- Is prone to human error since all data is keyed in
- Is used to enter text into the computer
4 features of a mouse
- Also referred to as a ‘pointing device’
- Is easy to use and inexpensive compared to other input devices
- Is designed to fit under the human hand
- Contains 2 or 3 buttons which are used to make selections ions on the screen
3 features of a tracker pad
- Known as a ‘touch-sensitive’ pad
- Used as an alternative to a mouse on a laptop computer
- Ideal for a portable device as it can be used in a confined space
3 features of a joystick
- Allows the user to control an object on the screen by maneuvering a small lever in different directions
- Senses movements which are converted to co-ordinates
- usually has pre-programmed buttons to allow actions to be carried out
4 features of a touch screen
- Minimal user training required
- no additional hardware required
- more expensive then a normal LCD screen
- special type of screen which reacts to his man touch
4 features of a microphone
- designed to input sound or human voice into a computer system
- Used in voice-recognition applications
- Background noice can interfere with spoken words
- Can record music and store in digital format
4 features of a scanner
- Converts a hard copy of pictures or text into a digital image
- beams of bright light are passed over the image which is recognized as a series of dots in a page
- once an image has been scanned it can be saved and edited using standard software
- If text is scanned it can be recognized by a word processor using optical character recognition
3 features of a digital camera
- stores picture in a memory card
- A small LCD screen is attached to view pictures taken immediately
- Pictures can be downloaded to a computer connected to the camera with USB cable or a wireless connection
What does LCD stand for
Liquid Crystal Display
What does OCR stand for
Optical Character Recognition
3 features of a graphics digitiser
- A flat electronic sensitive surface that captures the image drawn with a stylus pen
- Allows the user to record a hand-drawn image in a computer system
- Th image drawn can be imported to a graphics package for further editing
Name 6 output devices
- Visual display unit
- Impact printer
- Laser Printer
- Inkjet printer
- Plotter
- Speaker
What does VDU stand for
Visual Display Unit
4 features of a VDU
- Displays information or output from the computer on the screen
- The cost of the monitor increases as size and resolution gets bigger
- An LCD screen is much lighter and smaller then a typical desktop
- Some VDUS have inbuilt speakers and microphone making them suitable for multimedia purposes
Define pixel
A pixel is the smallest area on the screen that can be edited. A picture is mad up from a number of pixels
Define screen resolution
Screen resolution is a measure of the quality of the image on the screen. The more ou les the higher the resolution
What does CRT stand for
Cathode Ray Tube
Another name for the impact printer
Impact, Dot-matrix, printer
4 features of an impact printer
- Prints only in one color
- Costs less to produce multiple copies of data
- Produces low-quality print compared to a laser printer
- Can be noisy in the work place
What can a laser printer, three in one device do
- Scan
- Photocopy
- Fax capabilities
4 features of a laser printer
- Can print in black and white or color
- Is suitable for high-volume printing e.g school network
- Produces excellent print quality compared to other printers
- Workers at greater speeds than other printers
4 features of an inkjet printer
- Can print in black and white or colour
- Is suitable for home use to print photographs and small volumes of documents
- Has high-quality print which slows down the speed of output
- Is slow at producing output compared to a laser printer
4 features of a plotter
- Produces high-quality accurate and entailed diagrams
- Is used by architects, surveyors, pattern makers and engineers
- Can use a variety of paper sizes
- Can draw characters of different sizes and different fonts to be added to the drawings
4 features of a speaker
- small internal speakers are standard in computers
- provides sound output through the sound card from a computer
- can output music as well as the spoken word
- is useful for the visually impaired
