Unit 3 Flashcards
Purpose of using good body mechanics
To minimize chance of injury to ourselves, clients and coworkers.
What is considered good body mechanics
Maintaining proper body alignment, or posture through out a task. Applying appropriate biophysical principles
Define posture
Body’s proper alignment
Requirements for good posture
Musculoskeletal system is aligned such that the stresses and strain placed on bones, muscles, ligaments and cartilage are low as possible
Good posture standing
Double “s” curve from neck to sacrum. Goal is for the line of gravity to pass through most joint axes
Good posture sitting
Double s curve and 90, 90, 90
Good posture supine
Keep hips and knees flexed in order to maintain a neutral spinal position
Biophysical principles
Low COG, wide base of support, short lever arm, momentum, and straight planes
Body mechanics in practice : lifting
Keep the load close, create and appropriate base of support, use isometric muscle contractions of the core, lift with the legs, do not twist
Preventing a musculoskeletal injury
Practice good body mechanics, ergonomics, communication, rest stretch and strengthen.
Which soft tissues are often affected in bad body mechanics
Musculoskeletal injuries most common back neck and shoulder
Back care exercises
Strengthen core, lengthen pectoral muscles and hamstrings
Define body mechanics
The use of ones body to produce motion that is safe, energy conserving, and anatomically and physiologically efficient and leads to the maintenance of a persons body balance and control
