when missorui wanted state hood, but it couldnt be decided if it was to be free or slave. henry clay created a compromise in which the statehood of maine would be expedited, and it would become a free state. then, missouri could become a slave state without throwing off the balance. it was decided that all states north of 36 degrees North would be free, and ones sotuh would be slave.

when the cherokee tried to win just treatment by using the US legal system. they initially were refused a ruling by marshall as they had no federal standing, but after they got help from missionary worcester, the case passed in their favor. but jackson vetoed, and in 1835 they signed a treaty to move 800 miles west on foot.
