unit 3 Flashcards
do we absorb food or nutrients
nutrients
digestion vd absorption
digestion= the process by which foods are broken down into into their component molecules, either mechanically or chemically
absorption= the physiologic process by which molecules of food cross form the gastrointestinal tract into circulation
digestion the act of breaking down nutrients into their smallest parts
polymers to monomers
carbohydrates into glucose
fars(lipids) into fatty acid and glycerol
protein into amino acids
what is bolus?
food that has been chewed and mixed in the mouth with salive
what is the esophagus ?
a circular muscular tube connecting the pharnyx to the stomach
what is pyloric sphincter?
a ring of smooth muscle that connects the stomach and small intestine
what does the gastric glans does and where is it ?
gastric glands produce gastric juice that containing
water
pepsinogen, inactive form of protein
hydrochloric
it is in stomach
name the 3 parts of the small intestine in order
1- duodenum
2-jejunum
2-lleum
what does liver produce ? why does it do ?
liver produce bile and it is stored in the gallbladder
bile is lipids(fats) to aid digestion
makes particles small enough so pancreatic lipases can break the bonds releasing glycerol and fatty acids
what dies bile is
bile are lipids(fars) that breaks fats in small particles fatty acids and glycerol
jejunum where ?
where the absorption takes place the most
enzymes
proteines that helps speed up chemical reaction in our bodies
mouth - amylase(carbohydrates)
stomach- pepsinogen(proteines)
liver-biles(fats)
what are the 5 parts of the gi tract?
mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, anus
