Unit 3 Flashcards
Photoautotrophs
An organism that harnesses light energy to drive the synthesis of organic compounds from carbon dioxide.
Heterotroph
organism that obtains energy from the foods it consumes; also called a consumer
Chemoautotrophs
Organisms that use hydrogen sulfide or other chemicals as energy source instead of light.
aerobic cellular respiration
Series of 20 enzyme controlled redox reactions which are exergonic
obligate anaerobes
Requires oxygen as final electron acceptor. Ex most animals, plants, protist, fungi, and bacteria
Facultative anaerobes
Can tolerate both conditions. Ex. E. Coli (dysentery), vibrio cholerae (cholera)
Glycolysis
The breakdown of glucose by enzymes, releasing energy and pyruvic acid.
Kerbs cycle
Stage of cellular respiration that finishes the breakdown of pyruvic acid molecules to carbon dioxide, releasing energy.
