Unit 3: 1 to 8 Months Material ONLY Flashcards
1. To learn the material associated with newborns who are aged 1 to 8 months.
What are the components of a vocal assessment for the 1 to 8 months age range (4)?
- SLP wants a sample of “comfort state” vocalizations
- Duration of sample: 20 min
- Want to obtain 50-70 vocalizations
- Can use multiple observations in order to get the 20 min or to reach the 50-70 vocalizations.
What characteristics is the SLP interested in for the 1 to 8 months age range during vocal assessment (4)?
- Canonical babbling: Both consonant and vowel-like sounds
- Rate
- Proportion of consonant-like sounds
- Looking for multisyllabic babbling
How should feeding be managed in the 1 to 8 months population?
Feeding should be managed through:
1. Oral stimulation - Want qrinkleley toys
- Non-nutritive sucking - SLPs want pacifiers
- Presentations of toys to mouth - the child will have feeding issues if they won’t put anything in their mouth
Vocal development management 1 to 8 months
- Encourage vocalizations - parent must respond to infant
- Educate all family members on how to encourage the baby
- Model sounds for the stage that the infant is in

How can hearing impairment be corrected in infants 1 to 8 months?
Some children will be candidates for hearing aids while others may be candidates for cochlear implants.
What does cochlear implantation before age 2 promote?
Acquisition of expressive language, receptive language, and intelligibility, and may approximate normal language development rate.
1-8 months child behavior and development assessment components (2)
- High-risk infants need follow-up assessment for general and communicative development and in some cases is the only form of intervention required.
- If development is behind for chronological or adjusted age, a general stimulation program may be implemented through a collaborative effort (ie: OT, PT).
1-8 months child behavior and development management (5)
- Can be provided in a setting with other children
- Provide motor and cognitive stimulation
- Provide specialized services to target gross motor, fine motor, and oral-motor development.
- SLP needs to focus on oral-motor plan and communicative intervention focusing on interaction patterns.
- Most intervention is home based.
