A formal, hierarchical organization with many levels in which tasks, responsibilities, and authority are delegated among individuals, offices, or departments, held together by a central administration
Bureaucratic Agency/Executive Agency
Any of the 15 cabinet level organizations; they contain multiple agencies/bureaus
Department
Agency created to protect the public by regulating (making and enforcing rules) key sectors of the economy
Independent Agency
The authority of a government agency to use their own judgment when determining the exact meaning of a law as they enforce it
Bureaucratic Discretion (Discretionary Authority)
Agencies carry out the laws passed by Congress
Bureaucratic Implementation
A specific guideline that has the force of law; written by an executive branch agency to clarify the ambiguities of a broad law
Rule (Rule Making)
The tendency of an agency to resist change and/or orders from the president, even when the change is needed
Bureaucratic Inertia/ Bureaucratic Noncompliance
An alliance that includes policy experts, media pundits, congressional staff members, and interest groups who regularly debate an issue (similar to an iron triangle but with more than three parts)
Issue Network
Agency created by Congress to make rules and enforce anti-pollution laws; writes the rules of enforcing the Clean Air Act
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
Agency created by Congress to enforce campaign finance laws
Federal Elections Commission (FEC)
Agency created by Congress to enforce laws that regulate the stock market
Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)
Protects from terrorist attacks, drug smugglers, and natural disasters
Department of Homeland Security
Funds and monitors national transportation projects and agencies
Department of Transportation
Provides medical and other services for military veterans
Department of Veterans Affairs
Monitors educational progress and runs the college loan program
