Who is on the triple alliance at the start?
Austria-Hungary, Germany, Italy
Who was part of the Triple Entente?
Britain, France, and Russia
Who killed to start WWI?
Archduke of Austria-Hungary, Franz Fernidsnd was assassinated by Serbia.
What is militarism?
The need/want to build more and more weapons and build a better army
What is Imperialism?
Gaining colonies
How did Canada respond when we were called to war?
Everyone in Canada supported the war
What was Laurier’s famous quote?
“ready, aye, ready”
How did the Canadians see the war as unfolding?
Short, lasting only until Christmas.
What was the purpose of propaganda posters? Y
To gain people for the war effort
Women’s role in WWI?
Women were considered to frail for battle, so stayed home. Some joined the service and became nurses or drivers.
Quality of Canadian equipment?
Terrible.
Why was Camadian Equipment so bad?
Sam Hughes was the minister of milita, he didn’t care about the quality of his project, he just wanted money.
What was the war measures act?
An act that got rid of certain Canadians basic rights.
What did the war measures act do?
Got rid of the right to a lawful arrest, censored mail, and recent immigrants especially form Germany and Austria-Hungary were sent to internment camps.
What was the western front?
Anything west of France
What is a stalemate?
A standstill in battle.
New technology/weapons?
Airplanes, tanks, poisonous gas.
What happened in the battle of Ypes?
Lots of chlorine gas produced by Germans. Canadians thought bravely, and established a reputation.

What were the outcome of all the major Canadian battles?
Won every one.
What happened in the Somme?
Canada used tanks to get an advantage, won. It was very muddy.
What happened in Vimy Ridge?
All four divisions fought together for the first time, by themselves.
What happened in passchendale?
It was very muddy, and lost many Canadians, 15,000.
War at sea?
Germany had U-boats that were submarines. Triple entente developed their own convoy system and an underwater listening device to track them.
War at home?
The economy was booming after the PM replaced the shell committee for a better one which made ships planes and shells too.
How did the government pay for the war?
Used victory bonds; introduced income tax, and borrowed money.
How did role of women change?
Women begun to contribute to the labour force.
When did women get to vote?
1916 in Manitoba
1917 in BC, Alberta, SK
1918 in all of Canada
What was the Halifax explosion?
The ship Mont Blanc that was full of dynamite was hit by another boat and exploded.
What was the conscription crisis; who supported and who didn’t?
Borden and English Canadians supported conscription. Laurier and French Canadians did not support conscription.
What acts did Borden pass to help him win election and what did they do?
Military voters act: let people overseas vote
Wartime elections act: gave vote to women related to servicemen, and didn’t allow recent immigrants (within 15 years) vote.
What country left in 1917 and which one joined?
Russia left the entente force in 1917, USA joined and so did Italy.
Who won the war?
Entente won, Britain, France, and previously Russia (but now USA).
Major treaty keeping Germany weak?
Treaty of Versailles
What did the treaty of Versailles do?
Made Germans not be able to use U-boats, airforce, and had to have less that 100,000 men in their army. They lost land. Had to pay $30 billion dollars in damages, and had to accept the guilt clause.
