Professional or firm who sell to a candidate the technologies, services, and strategies required to get that candidate elected.
Campaign Consultant
A paid professional who travels with the candidate and coordinates the many different aspects of the campaign.
Campaign Manager
Type of primary election in which voters must register with a political party when registering to vote and voters CANNOT change the party affiliation on primary election day.
Closed Primary
When members of one political party vote in the other party’s primary election to influence the selection of the nominee.
Crossover Voting
The practice of voting before Election Day at traditional voting locations.
Early Voting
Any candidate NOT affiliated with a political party, which must submit a petition to get on the general election ballot.
Independent
Professional who produces political candidates’ television, radio, and print advertisements.
Media Consultant
Type of primary election in which the voter is given a ballot with all the candidates from all the political parties and, if a candidate receives a majority of the votes, then that candidate is elected to that office, however, if no candidate receives a majority of the votes, then a run-off election between the two candidates with most votes will occur, regardless of the candidates’ party affiliation.
Nonpartisan Primary
Type of primary election in which voters do NOT register with a political party when registering to vote, therefore may vote in any political party’s primary and, once voted, CAN participate in another political party’s function.
Open Primary
Established ways of behavior.
Order
Type of electoral system in which, to win the election, a candidate needs only receive the most votes in the election, not necessarily a majority of the votes.
Plurality Vote
A private group that raises and disburses funds for use in electoral campaigns.
Political Action Committee (PAC)
An organization that attempts to influence the government and its policies by having its members elected to important government offices.
Political Party
A tax paid by Texans as a prerequisite to register to vote; abolished by the Twentieth-Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution.
Poll Tax
Voting based on the imagined future performance of a candidate or political party.
