Unit 2 Vocab Flashcards
Energy
The ability to do work
Matter
Anything with mass that takes up space
Monomer
A small, repeating molecule used to build polymers
Polymer
Long chain of large repeating molecules
Eg: DNA, Rubber, Wool
Biomolecule
What is it? What do they do? EG?
Large molecule from a living organism
Constructs cells – performs functions essential to life.
Eg: Lipids, Protiens, Carbs, Nucleic Acid
Photosynthesis
Process where a plant uses sunlight + water + carbon dioxide to make glucose + oxygen
Chloroplast
Organelle in a cell where light absorption and photosynthesis occur.
Cellular Respiration
Process where organisms use oxygen to break down glucose molecules to get chemical energy (ATP) for cell function.
Oxygen + Glucose –> ATP + CO2 + Water
Mitochondria
Organelle where steps 2 and 3 of cellular respiration occurs
Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP)
Energy-carrying molecule that powers the cell
Biochemical Cycle
Movement of matter and energy through Earth’s spheres
Glucose
Simple sugar monomer
Molecule
A group of atoms bonded together –fundamental unit of a chemical compound
Eg: Glucose, ATP, Oxygen
