UNIT 2 The Chemistry of Cells Flashcards
Atom
The smallest unit of a substance that maintains the properties of that substance
Element
A substance that is made entirely of one type of atom.
Cell Theory
Describes the basic characteristics of all cells and organisms.
Prokaryotic Cells
Have a cell membrane but do not have organelles that are enclosed in a membrane.
Eukaryotic Cells
Larger than Prokaryotic Cells. They have a nucleus that holds the genetic material and organelles. They are unicellular.
Cell Membrane
Surrounds the cell, a protective, flexible barrier that controls what enters and leaves the cell.
Cytoplasm
Gel Like liquid inside the cell and this maintains the cell shape.
Types of Organelles
- Ribosomes: are organelles that make proteins.
- Mitochondria are organelles that release energy from food molecules.
- Plant cells have chloroplasts that produce sugar and give plants their green color.
DNA
Genetic Material
