Beginner
ABILITY: Knows no English
EXAMPLE OF LANG TAUGHT AT THIS LEVEL: numbers, days, basic greetings, the verb ‘to be’ (I am, you are etc)
LEVEL:
False beginner
ABILITY: Has encountered English, but has very limited ability to speak basic phrases
EXAMPLE OF LANG TAUGHT AT THIS LEVEL: “holiday English” – A coffee, please. Thank you.
LEVEL:
Elementary
ABILITY: Can form very basic phrases; limited ability
EXAMPLE OF LANG TAUGHT AT THIS LEVEL: forms of be: I am happy, she is clever
LEVEL: A1
Pre-intermediate
ABILITY: Knows the basic structures of the language; has a wider range of vocabulary
EXAMPLE OF LANG TAUGHT AT THIS LEVEL: clothes (e.g. blouse), past tense, comparatives, functional language (e.g. in a relationship), and structures such as the present perfect tense.
LEVEL: A2
Intermediate
ABILITY: Able to tackle more complex structures but may still struggle to form these correctly
EXAMPLE OF LANG TAUGHT AT THIS LEVEL: Phrasal verbs: hang up, pick up, check out
LEVEL: B1
Upper-intermediate
ABILITY: Extended ability and knowledge of structures
EXAMPLE OF LANG TAUGHT AT THIS LEVEL: Conditionals: If I were you, I would go to the doctor. Past: Used to/get used to.
LEVEL: B2
Advanced
ABILITY: Much more accurate use of structures and more depth in their use and understanding
EXAMPLE OF LANG TAUGHT AT THIS LEVEL: Inversion: Little did she know he was about to propose!
LEVEL: C1
Proficiency
ABILITY: Near-native speaker level
EXAMPLE OF LANG TAUGHT AT THIS LEVEL: All idiomatic language: I can’t remember off the top of my head, and giving your opinion in an argument.
LEVEL: C2
