Unit 2 - Reproduction Vocab Flashcards
Asexual Reproduction
Involves only ONE parent that produces genetically IDENTICAL offspring, which can make survival difficult in a changing environment
Binary Fission
A type of asexual reproduction in which a prokaryotic divides in half producing two daughter cells
Daughter Cells
Result from the division of a single parent cell
Diploid Cells
Contain TWO sets of Homologous Chromosomes (ONE from each parent)
Haploid Cells
Contain a SINGLE set of chromosomes (MIXED from each parent)
Multiple Fission
A type of ASEXUAL reproduction in which a Protist DIVIDES producing TWO or MORE identical daughter cells
Parent Cell
The cell that DIVIDES to form daughter cells
Sexual Reproduction
Involves TWO parents each contributing half of their genetic material, producing UNIQUE offspring which increases VARIATION in a population
Genetic Variation
The DIFFERENCES in genetic makeup between organisms or groups of organisms
Vegetation Propagation
A type of ASEXUAL reproduction in which a NEW plant grows from a PIECE of a parent plant.
What are the 4 bacterial growth phases?
1) Lag Phases 2) Log Phase 3) Stationary Phase 4) Decline Phase
What are 5 examples of Asexual Reproduction?
1) Budding 2) Fragmentation 3) Binary Fission 4) Parthenogenesis 5) Vegetative Propagation
Is Conjugation a form of reproduction
No
What is Conjugation?
The direct transfer of DNA between two temporarily connected cells of certain organisms. (changes genetic diversity)
