Presentism
To assume they are just like us… Incorrectly or mistakenly thinking people of the past are just like us.
Otherness of the Past
Studying the past, the further you go back the will have a major difference from the present.
Contextualization
Being able to connect other topics to the overall topic.
Anglican Church (aka. Church of England)
Had been too catholic. Founded in 1533 by King Henry the 8th. Initially the only Catholic Church in Western England.
Protestan Revolution (1500s)
Protested the teaching of the England church.
Martin Luther: Had been against the Catholic Church to the point of creating new church system Lutheran
Separatist
The Church of England is terribly catholic that we must start a new church.
Puritans
They wanted to purify the Church of England instead of becoming separate they wanted to make them better.
Take out the catholic and place Puritan ideals
John Calvin (Calvinist)
Which are puritans but a different branch of puritans. (Bring the Calvinist ideals)
They did this because English society had fallen into moral decline
Too much money had been in England. The Colombian exchange brings money to Europe making them rich. Which leads to many sinners and city dwellers.
Original Sin
The Sin of Adam and Eve disobeying god. All humans are born with this original sin
Elect
The people that are granted salvation by Gods grace, which no one deserved.
Predestination
You have no say in what god will do. Few people will be granted grace. They had been chosen by god before our birth.
1.Preparation for grade through self-discipline, Bible study and being aware of gods presents.
2.Signs from god are common and reveal his will.
Conversion Experience
Required for the church membership it is a sign from God that a person has been grated grace.
Plymouth (1620)
A group of separatist landed which were the “pilgrims”
Reasoning for landing:
1.Left England because both leaders were anti-puritan
2. People had traveled on the Mayflower but the boat got off course and landed in Plymouth-> First Thanksgiving.
Massachusetts Bay Colony (1628)
Larger groups began to arrive which included families and villages.
Covenanted Community
A promise (A sacred promise with god)
John Winthrop
Had been a lawyer and The first governor of Massachusetts. Wrote the essay “The Model of Christian Charity”.
The Model of Christian Charity
Explain the idea of a Convecated Community. Everyone has a role in society. As god makes the decisions for his people “Gods Plan”

Criticized
Roger Williams (separatist)
Believed that puritans were not strict enough on there people.Wants separation from the church & state. He believed people should go to church because they want to not “forcefully”

Anne Hutchison
-A women puritan
-However criticized some of the curtains beliefs.
-Went against normal gender norms as she held bible studies in her home. “God still speaks with people”
Quakers
Christians from England. Also criticized the England Church but were not Puritans. They were a separate group.
no ministries, anyone is allowed to speak by Holy Spirit
-Puritans were against the but had allowed to live amongst them they just had to be taxed.
Lydia Wardell (1663)
Protested against puritans by coming to church naked. Had been arrested and whipped.
Quaker women got whipped in public & ears were clipped
Patriarchy
Society in which men/fathers were uncharge and glorified. (Pat=Paternal Fathers)
God was a father figure
-Fathers play a big role in most homes, learning respect/obidence to your real father.
-Fathers had to be wise and good care takers.
Bundling
The night before marriage they sleep with one another with a divider.They CAN NOT have sex with one another.
