Unit 2: Properties of materials Flashcards
What is a solution?
A solution is a mixture of solute and solvent.
What is a solvent?
A solvent is a liquid in which other substances (solute) will dissolve and most of the time in liquid form.
What is a solute?
A solute is a substance that is dissolved and most of the time in solid form.
What is a soluble?
A soluble is a substance that will dissolve.
What is an insoluble substance?
An insoluble substance is a substance that will not dissolve.
What is solubility?
Solubility is how soluble a substance is.
Is solution transparent?
Yes.
What added together becomes a solution?
Solute + solvent -> solution.
How many substances does dissolving need?
Two.
How many substance does melting need?
One.
What is saturated solution?
The max amount of solute dissolved in a solvent.
What is a dependent variable?
A dependent variable (y-axis) is the factor that changes in an investigation as a result of changing the independent variable.
What is an independent variable?
An independent variable (x-axis) is the factor that is changed by the experimenter in an investigation.
What are control variables?
Control variables are factors that are kept the same in an investigation so that the test is fair.
What is paper chromatography used for?
A method of separation.
