Unit 2 part 7 - oxidation states Flashcards
6APR25
What is the oxidation state?
The number assigned to show the amount of electrons transferred in forming a bond
What happens in an oxidation reaction?
The electrons transfer
How can oxidation happen?
- Addition of oxygen
- Removal of hydrogen
- Loss of electrons
- Increase of oxidation state
What does an increase in oxidation state mean?
means the atom has lost some electron control
What does a decrease in oxidation state mean?
Means the atom has gained electron control
Oxidation states are a measure of what?
How electrons are distributed
In covalent substances the electron distribution depends on what?
The polarity of the bond and the relative electronegativities of the bonding atoms
