Unit 2 // Osmosis + Transpiration Flashcards
Osmosis
The movement of water from a dilute solution to a more concentrated solution through a selectively permeable membrane
Transpiration
The evaporation of water from mesophyll cells, followed by diffusion through the leaf air spaces and stomata
Turgor
The state of a plant cell when it has gained enough water by osmosis for the cell membrane to push against cell wall, making the cell firm
Plasmolysis
A plant cell is plasmolysed when it has lost water by osmosis and it’s membrane separates from cell wall
Change in mass
= final mass - initial mass
Percentage change in mass
Change in mass / initial mass X 100
Cell lysis
If too much water enters an animal cell by osmosis it will swell up and eventually burst
This occurs because an animal cell does not have a cell wall to limit the amount of water entering the cell
Flaccid
When plant cells lose water by osmosis they cannot remain turgid and wilting occurs. The cella are not turgid as are described as flaccid
