Unit 2 - Organisms Flashcards
What is the function of the stomach?
Churning of food
What is the function of the heart?
Pump Blood
What is the function of the kidney?
Maintenance of water and removal of soluble waste
What is the function of the lung?
Exchange of the respiratory gases.
What is the function of the skin?
Protection
What is the function of the root? (Plant)
Absorpition
What is the function of the Stem?
Transport water and food
What is the function of the flower?
Production of seeds
What is the function of the leaf?
Photosynthesis
What is the order of the parts of an organism?
Cells Tissues Organs Systems Organism
What is stage 1 of mitosis?
DNA is replicated to form homologous chromosomes.
What is stage 2 of mitosis?
Nuclear membranes break down.
What is stage 3 of mitosis?
Homologous chromosomes line up along the equator of the cell.
What is stage 4 of mitosis?
Spindle fibres form and pull sister chromatids to opposite poles of the cells.
What is stage 5 of mitosis?
New nuclear membranes form around the chromosomes at each pole of the cells.
What is stage 6 of mitosis?
The cell cytoplasm splits to form two new, genetically-identical cells.
What is the function of mitosis?
Mitosis provides new cells for growth and repair of damaged cells and maintains the diploid chromosomes complement.
What are stem cells?
They are unspecialised cells which can divide in order to self-renew.
What is the hierarchy of organisms?
Cells –> Tissues –> Organs –> System = Organism
What does CNS stand for?
Central nervous system
What do CNS consist of?
The brain and spinal cord
What is the function of the Cerebrum?
Controls conscious thought
What is the function of Cerebellum?
Controls balance and coordinated movement.
What is the function of the Medulla?
Controls involuntary actions (digestion, breathing rate and heart rate)
