Unit 1 - Cell Biology Flashcards
What is the enzyme word equation?
Substrate - Enzyme - Product
What is a synthesis reaction?
A build up of a large molecule from smaller molecules
What is a degradation reaction?
The breakdown of large molecules.
What happens to enzymes at high temperatures?
They become denatured and will never work again.
What is a chromosome?
They are long DNA molecules which hold genetic material and are found in the nucleus of a cell.
What determines the function of a protein?
The order of amino acids
What are genes?
A length of DNA with a specific location on a chromosome.
What is DNA?
It is a large and complex structure which carries genetic code that determines characteristics of a living thing.
What is the phospholorylase build up word equation?
Gulcose1-phosphate —–> Starch
What are proteins made of?
Amino acids
What is the word equation for catalyse?
Hydrogen pereoxide ——–> Water + Oxygen
What is the messenger DNA called?
mRNA
What is the job of mRNA?
To carry a copy of the genetic code out of the nucleus and to a ribosome.
What are the four bases?
Adenine Thymine
Guanine Cytosine
How many different types of amino acids are there?
20
How many substrates does one enzyme work with?
1 because enzymes are specific
What is amylase specific to?
Starch
What are the 5 functions of proteins?
Structural - Shape Hormones - Messengers Antibodies - Protect Receptors - Receive signals Enzymes - Speed up reactions
