Voluntary Migration
Type of migration in which people make the choice to move to a new place (ex. After WWII, large groups moved from the Northeast and Midwest to the South for economic opportunities, less tax, and better climate).
Forced Migration
Type of migration in which people are compelled to move by economic, political, environmental, or cultural factors (ex. Transatlantic Slave Trade)
Chain Migration
Type of migration in which people move to a location because others from their community have previously migrated there (Millions of Irish worked in the U.S., due to the famine and oppression in Ireland, and influence family and friends from Ireland to also move to the U.S.)
Intervening Obstacle
an occurrence that holds migrants back
Brain Drain
the loss of trained or educated people to the lure of work in another (often richer) country
Out-Migration
The process of people moving out of an area in their country to move to another area in their country permanently.
In-Migration
The process of people moving into a new area in their country there permanently.
Bracero Program
An agreement between the U.S. and Mexican governments, allowing Mexican citizens to take temporary agricultural work in the United States.
