Unit 1: Thinking Geographically Flashcards
Scale
Refers to the area of the world being studied - Local, Regional, National, or Global
Connection
The relationships among people and objects across the barrier of space
Remote Sensing
Geospatial technology that gathers data without making physical contact.
GIS
Geographic Information Systems - captures, stores, organizes, and displays geographic data that can be used to configure both simple and complex maps
GPS
Global Positioning System - integrated network of at least 31 satellites in the U.S.. system that orbit Earth and transmit location data to handheld receivers.
Globalization
The expansion of economic, cultural, and political processes on a worldwide scale.
Site
Refers to a place’s absolute location, as well as its physical characteristics (ex: landforms, climate, and resources)
Situation
Refers to a place’s location in relation to other places or its surrounding features (describes a place’s connections to other places - transportation routes, political associations, etc)
Space-Time Compression
Describes the processes causing the relative distance between places to shrink. (ex. Modern transportation has greatly reduced travel times)
Distance Decay
The farther away one thing is from another, the less interaction the two will have (vice versa)
Sustainability
The use of Earth’s land and natural resources in ways that ensure they will continue to be available in the future.
Cultural Landscape/Cultural Geography
A natural landscape that has been modified by humans, reflecting their cultural beliefs and values
Concentration
The spread of a feature over space
Distribution
Arranged within a given space
