Unit 2 microscope Flashcards
Stage
The flat black panel that holds the slide parallel to the floor
Light source
Located under the stage
Iris
Controls how much light is passing through the specimen. This can be a lever or a dial just under the stage; Set the iris at the smallest setting to start
Ocular lens or lenses
The “eyepiece” of the microscope. There may be one or two. If there are two, you can adjust the distance between them to fit your eyes. You’ll know they are adjusted right when you see one image through the microscope instead of two partially overlapping circles
Objective lenses
There are usually 3 or 4 lenses on a dial between the eyepiece and the stage. The magnification of each lens is printed on the side. Turn the dial until the shortest lens (probably the 4x) is lined up directly between them to fit your eyes. {usually 4X, 10X, 40X, 100X}
Slide Clips
Your microscope may have a pair of metal clips to hold the slide in place on the stage. Center the specimen on the slide over the light source. Move the slide clips holding the slide with dials underneath the stage.
Coarse focus
This large knob that moves the stage up and down is located on the stem of the microscope. Start with the stage all the way up with the 4X objective lens.
Fine focus
A smaller knot that is usually located just outside or just inside the course focus know. Use the fine focus to make the image as clear as possible.
