Unit 2 Materials and Components - Composites Flashcards
How is a composite material created?
when 2 or more materials are bonded together
Why would you make a composite material?
Improved mechanical function
improved aesthetic properties
What is a benefit of using composite materials?
They have a excellent strength to weight ratio
What is GRP?
Glass Reinforced Plastic
How is GRP manufactured
Using thermosetting plastic resin reinforced with very fine glass
What form does the glass come in for GRP?
Matting or strips
What are the advantages of GRP?
Good strength to weight ratio
very resistant to corrosion
What are the disadvantages of GRP?
The resin can shatter
Unsatisfactory for vehicles - risk in accidents
Used in boat building but prone to osmosis
What are the stages of manufacture using GRP?
- High quality mould is prepared
- Release agent is sprayed onto the mould
- Gel coat is applied to the mould
- Glass matting, layers of resin and catalyst are placed on the mould
- Layering up is done and then the left to cure overnight
What is carbon fibre?
Thermosetting plastic resin and carbon fibers set on a polymer matrix
Why would carbon fibre be used over GRP?
Much stronger
When would carbon fibre be used?
high performance structural applications e.g. aircraft, sports equipment, sports cars
Are able to replace traditional materials
What are the stages of manufacture of carbon fibre?
- High quality mould is prepared
- Release agent is sprayed onto the mould
- Gel coat is applied to the mould
- Carbon fibre, layers of resin and catalyst are placed on the mould
- Layering up is done and then the left to cure overnight
