Unit 2-Forces Flashcards
Dynamics
The study of the forces causing motion
Force
A push or pull in a direction. A vector quantity. Units are in newtons
Net force Fnet(with arrow above symbol)
Is the total of all forces acting on a single object
Free body diagram
A diagram that shows all of the forces acting on an object
Force of gravity Fg (with arrow above symbol)
The force with which the Earth attracts another object towards self
Normal force FN(with arrow above symbol)
The support force exerted on an object that is in contact with a surface
Force of tension FT(with arrow above symbol)
A pulling force in ropes and strings
Applied force FA(with arrow above symbol)
A push or a pull. When a rope is pulled it is tension
Force of friction FF(with arrow above symbol)
Resistance to motion caused by different materials sliding against each other
Newtons first law
Inertia, all objects or remain at rest or continue in constant motion unless acted upon by an external non-zero net force
Fundamental forces
Gravitational force, electromagnetic force, strong nuclear force, weak nuclear force
Gravitational force
Exists between any two masses in the universe
Electromagnetic force
Occurs between particles with charge or magnetism
Strong nuclear force
Force of attraction or repulsion between protons and neutrons in the nucleus of atoms
Weak nuclear force
The force of attraction or repulsion during particle transformations in the nucleus of atoms
