Unit 1-Motion Flashcards
Scientific Notation
A short form used to deal with large numbers or very small numbers
Scalar quantity
Has magnitude only
Vector quantity
Has both magnitude and direction indicated with an arrow above the symbol
Distance d
The length of the path that an object moves along
Position d (with arrow above symbol)
The length and direction of the direct path from an object to a reference point
di (with arrow above symbol)
Initial position
df (with arrow above symbol)
Final position
Displacement (change in) d (with arrow above symbol)
The length of the direct path from the initial to final position
Delta (change in)
Change in always the final minus the initial
Speed
How fast, determined by the distance covered in a period of time
Velocity
Displacement over time. Vector quantity
Average speed Vav
Total distance covered in a period of time
Instantaneous speed v
Speed at a particular instant
Constant speed v
Speed that doesn’t change
Uniform motion
Speed and direction that does not change. Velocity does not change. The magnitude of the velocity equals speed
