Unit 2 Exam Review Flashcards
What is metabolism?
Sum of all chemical reactions that occur in the cell
What is a metabolic pathway?
sequential series of chem reactions in living cells
What are the steps of aerobic respirations?
Glycolysis, pyruvate oxidation, krebs cycle and oxidative phosphorylation
What is ATP?
A substance present in all living cells that provides energy for many metabolic processes and is involved in making RNA
What is substrate level phosphorylation?
ATP formation from transfering a phosphate group to ADP
What is substrate level phosphorylation?
ATP formation from transfering a phosphate group to ADP
What is glycolysis?
metabolic pathway that breaks glucose down to pyruvate
What is pyruvate oxidation?
a biochemical reaction that involves the oxidation of pyruvate to create acetyl-CoA
What is the krebs cycle?
The cyclic metabolic pathway that acquires acetyl-CoA and oxidizes it to carbon dioxide while regenerating the compound that picks up more acetyl-CoA
What is the Elctron transport chain?
a series of electron carriers and protein complexes embedded in the inner mitochondrial membreane that accept and donate electrons in a sequential series
What is anaerobic respiration?
metabolic pathway in which an inorganic molecule other than oxygen is used as the final electron acceptor during tyhe chemiosmotic synthesis of ATP
What are light-dependant reactions?
The reaction that traps solar energy and used it to generate ATP and NADPH
What are light-independant reatcions?
the reaction that assimilates carbon dioxide to produce an organic molecule that can be used to produce biologically important molecules (E.X. carbohydrates)
What is a thylakoid?
a membrane within the chloroplasts that forms interconnected disks
What is a photosystem?
1 of 2 protein-based complexes compsed of clusters of pigments that absorb light energy
