Who is James Murray
Murray was Military governor of Nouvelle- France from 1760-1763. He was British North Americas First Governor general after the signing of the treaty of paris.
Who is Guy Carleton
He replaced James Murray, He wants the british to change their ways and accommodate france. He was also worried that the thirteen colonies would spill into Quebec. Responsible for the Quebec Act.
300 British Merchants
They were denied voting rights and they were upset with James Murray because James did not want 300 people to maliciously control 60 000 French Catholics and possibly lead to revolt.
French Catholics
A colony who wants to protect their culture and identity. The British slowly tried to assimilate them.

The absorption of a minority group into the culture of a majority group

Representative government
Representative works by elected people to represent them to the legislative assembly but they have no power because they can be vetoed by the oligarchy and British crown
Responsible Government
Responsible government is where the the legislative assembly makes decisions and it has to be signed into law by the executive council and governor

Ontario and Canada west, English speaking
Lower Canada
Quebec and east, speaks French
Lord Durham
Lord Durham was a new Governor General who went over to Canada to find out why upper and Lower Canada were rebelling. He suggested assimilating the French.
William Lyon Mackenzie
Leader of rebellion in upper Canada, was also a news paper owner and wrote about the rebellion.
Louis- Joseph papineau
Louis was the leader of the French, lower Canada rebellion and also owned a paper and was concerned with the French’s rights
Rep by pop representation by population
There were more English more than French so they English wanted rep by pop so they could have more control.
Oligarchies
Oligarchies had more power than reformers, they were made up of higher social class people and were able to veto the reformers
Reformers
The reformers were ordinary farmers and business owners that made decisions and brought them to the oligarchy to be passed

British North America was made up of the thirteen colonies
Thirteen colonies
They were the British’s established colonies and they were established after the 7 years war. They rebelled and formed the USA
Know the difference between Representative and Responsible Government:
-The reformers wanted a responsible government in order to be heard and their decisions to have a say.
-Olagarchies had more power than the reformers and were able to veto decisions made by the reformers. The olagarchy was made up of higher ranked people. The reformers were ordinary farmers and business owners.
-Representative government is where elected people represent ideas to the legislative assembly but they have no power because they can be vetoed by the oliogarchy and British crown.
-Responsible governement is where the legislative assembly makes decisions and it has to be signed into law by the executive council and governor.
Know about the rebellions in upper and lower Canada:
-The rebellions in upper and lower Canada were due to not having a responsible government and getting all of their decisions vitoed.
-They wanted different laws and they farmed differently and had separate religions. Upper canada wanted to expand lower canada wanted to protect their culture.
-Upper Canada was less violent and was led by William Lyon Mckenzie. Lower Canada was more violent and was led by Louis-Jospeh Papineau.
-Durham Reccomended that the french be assimilated which hurt the french because that would mean that the english had more power (1 Language) he also suggested rep by pop
-They learned their lesson from the Quebec Act to not assimilate people because it will backfire.
