Unit 2 ~ Epithelial Tissues Flashcards
Where can you find Pseudostratified Columnar cells?
Nasal cavities, Trachea, Larger airways of lungs
What do Pseudostratifed Columnar cells do?
Propulsion, removes dust and particles from airways, has cilia
Where can you find Simple Cuboidal cells?
Sweat glands, Thyroid
What does Simple Cuboidal cells do?
Absorption and Secretion
Where can you find Stratified Squamous cells?
Skin (keratinized) and the throuat, vagina, mouth (soft)
What do Stratified Squamous cells do?
Protects underlying cells
What does a Stratified Cuboidal cell look like?
Many layers of cuboidal cells
Where can you find Stratified Cuboidal cells?
Sweat glands, Mammary glands, Salivary glands, Kidney tubles
What do Stratified Cuboidal cells do?
Protection in glands
What does a Transitional cell look like?
Many layers of round cells that can stretch to become flat and return to round form
Where can you find Transitional cells?
Ureters, Urinary bladder, Urethra
What do Transitional cells do?
Specialized to become distended (swollen)
What does a Simple columnar cell look like?
Single layer of tall cells with cilia on the apical side
Where can you find Simple Columnar cells?
Stomach, Intestine, Uterine tubes, Kidney ducts
What do Simple Columnar cells do?
Absorption
What does a Simple Squamous cell look like?
Single layer of flat cells with a flat nucleus
Where can you find Simple Squamous cells?
Lung air sacs, Walls of capillaries and vessels
What do Simple Squamous cells do?
Diffusion and Filtration
What does a Pseudostratified cell look like?
Single layer of tall cells with an elongated nucleus at bottom
What does a Simple cuboidal look like?
Single layer of cube-shaped cells with a central nucleus
What does a Stratified Squamous look like?
Many layers of squamous cells at top surface, cuboidal cells in middle, columnar cells at base.
