Connective Tissue Flashcards
What are the three Fibers in connect tissues?
Collagen, Elastic, Recticular
What does Collagen Fiber do?
Provides high tensile strength; tough
What does Elastic do?
Thin fibers that allow for stretch; long
What does Recticular fibers do?
Branched collagenous fibers that form delicate networks
What are three structral elements found in Connective Tissue?
Ground substance, Fibers, Cells
What is ground substance?
Unstructured material that fills the space between cells
What are Cells?
Fibroblasts, chondroblasts, osteoblasts, and hematopoietic stem cells
What is Fibroblasts?
Connective tissue propper
What is Chondroblasts?
Cartilage
What is Osteoblasts?
Bone
What is hematopoietic stem cells?
Blood
What is mesenchyme?
Embryonic connective tissue
What are the two types of connective tissue proper?
Loose and Dense
What are the three types of loose connective tissue proper?
Areolar, Adipose, and Reticular
What is Areolar?
Gel-like matrix with all three connective tissue fibers (collagen, elastic, recticular)
What cells does Areolar contain?
Fibroblasts, macrophages, mast cells, and some white blood cells.
What is the function of Areolar?
Wraps and cushions organs
Where is Areolar found?
Underlines skin
What is Adipose?
Matrix similar to areolar with closely packed adipocutes (fat cells)
What is the function of Adipose?
Reserves food stores, insulates against heat loss, and supports and protects.
Where is Adipose found?
Found under skin, around kidneys, within abdomen, and in breasts
What fibers are found in Adipose?
Collagen fibers
What is Reticular?
Loose ground substance with reticular fibers; reticualr cell lie in a fiber network
Where can Reticular be found?
Found in lymph nodes, bone marrow, and the spleen
What are the two types of Dense connective tissue proper?
Dense Regular and Dense Irregular
What is Dense Regular?
Parallel collagen fibers with a few elastic fibers (wave)
What is the cell type found in Dense Regular?
Fibroblasts
What is the function of Dense Regualr?
Attaches muscles to bone or to other muscles, and bone to bone
Where is the Dense Regular found?
Found in tendons, ligaments, and aponeuroses
What is Dense Irregular?
Irregular arranged collagen fibers with some elastic fibers
What is the Dense Irregular cell?
Fibroblasts
What is the function of Dense Irregular
Withstands tensions in many directions probiding structural strength
Where is Dense Irregular found?
Found in the dermis, submucosa of the digestive tract, and fibrous organ capsules
What are the three types of cartilage?
Hyaline, Elastic, and Fibrocartilage
What is Hyaline?
Firm matrix with imperceptible network of collagen fibers; chondrocytes lie in lacunae
What is the function of Hyaline?
Supports, reinforces, cushions, and resists compression; forms the costal cartilage
Where is Hyaline found?
Found in embryonic skeleton, the end of lone bones, nose, trachea, and larynx
What is Elastic C?
Similar to hyaline cartilage but with more elastic fibers
What is the function of Elastic C?
Maintains shape and structure while allowing flexibility
Where would you find Elastic C?
Supports external ear (pinna) and the epiglottis
What is fibrocartilage?
Matrix similar to hyaline but less firm with thick collagen fibers
What is the function of fibrocartilage?
Provides tensile strength and absorbs compression shock
Where is fibrocartilage found?
Found in intercertebral discs, the pubic symphysis, and in discs of the knee joint
What is bone called?
Osseous Tissue
What is bone?
Hard, calcified matrix with collagen fibers found in bone
Where can bone be found?
Osteocytes are found in lacunae and are well vascularized
What is bones function?
Supports, protects, and provides levers for muscular action; stores calcium, minerals, and fats
What is blood called?
Hematopoietic
What is blood?
Red and white cells in a fluid matrix (plasma)
What is the function of blood?
The transport of respiratory gases, nutrients and wastes
What are red blood cells called?
Erythrocyte
What are white blood cells called?
Leukocytes
