Unit 2 Definitions Flashcards
Discrete-trial procedure
Conditioning arrangement in which the opportunity to respond is limited to specific, relatively short instances (trials)
Respondent conditioning
Conditioning that rests on stimulus-stimulus pairing relations
Unconditional reflex
Unlearned stimulus-response relation
Conditional reflex
Stimulus-response relation acquired through respondent conditioning
Neutral stimulus
Stimulus that doesn’t elicit a conditional response in the absence of a learning hx
Unconditional stimulus
Stimulus that elicits an unlearned unconditional response
Unconditional response
Response elicited by an unconditional stimulus
Respondent extinction
Repeatedly presenting the conditioned stimulus w/o the unconditional stimulus, causing conditional responses to cease
Conditional stimulus
Stimulus that elicits a conditional response b/c of respondent conditioning
Habituation
Waning of responsiveness to an unconditional stimulus that is repeatedly presented
Spontaneous recovery
Reappearance of an extinguished conditional response following a period in which no trials are arranged
Higher-order conditioning
Respondent conditioning in which a neutral stimulus is paired w/a conditional stimulus, not an unconditional stimulus
Latent inhibition
Presenting a neutral stimulus repeatedly prior to pairing it w/an unconditional stimulus, which inhibits learning when they are paired
