Unit 2 - Conduction of Electricity Flashcards
What is the unit of charge
Coulomb (C)
Which direction is Conventional current flow?
positive to negative
Which direction is electron/charge flow?
negative to positive
What is meant by the term drift velocity of the electrons in the wire
average speed of electron passing through a wire in the presence of an electric field
How to derive the drift velocity equation
I = nAve
n = number of charge carriers per m^3
nV = total number of charge carriers
nVe = total charge = Q
V = length x Area so
Q = nVe –> Q = nLAe
Q = ixt , i = q/t (q equals to nLAe, so
i = nlae / t
(speed = dist/time -> v=L/A
so L = vt)
So i = nvtAe/t (t cancels out so i = nvAe
What is electric current
The rate of flow of electric charge
What actually is a coulomb
1 coulomb is the total charge supplied by a current of one ampere in a time of one second
What is a conductor and insulator
Conductors are materials that allow charge to flow easily.
Insulators are materials that dont allow charge to flow easily
