UNIT 1 - Kinematics Flashcards
Define displacement
The shortest distance from a fixed starting point to another point in a specified direction.
(Vector quantity and has magnitude and direction)
Define (average) speed and the equation
The distance covered in a given time
Speed = distance/time
S = d/t
(or s =x/t) distance can be d or x
Define (average) velocity and equation
The change of displacement per unit time
Velocity = displacement/time
V = s/t
Units for speed and velocity
(m/s) or (ms⁻¹)
They the same
(or km/h etc)
What does instantaneous mean
When it happens at a particular time, so instantaneous speed is speed at a particular time not the average speed
Define acceleration and the equation and units
Change of velocity per unit time
acceleration = change in velocity/time taken
a= v-u/t
(m/s²) or (ms⁻²)
How to work out gradient
Rise over run
Gradient = rise/run
How to work out acceleration in a velocity-time graph
And velocity in a displacement-time graph
For velocity-time graph, gradient = rise/run = acceleration. Positive gradient is acceleration, negative gradient is deceleration.
Same for displacement-time graph, gradient = rise/run = velocity. Positive gradient = positive velocity, negative gradient = negative velocity.
What do the suvat symbols mean and list units
S = displacement (m)
U = initial velocity (ms⁻¹)
V = velocity (ms⁻¹)
A = acceleration (must be constant) (ms⁻²)
T = time taken (s)
What are the 4 suvat equations
V = u + at
S = 1/2(u + v)t
S = ut + 1/2at ²
V ² = u ² + 2as
You dont need to memorise tho, for physics
How to find displacement in a velocity time graph
The area under gradient
How to derive suvat??
Idk m8 learn it
Define projectile and trajectory
Any body given an initial velocity then follows a path determined by the effect of if gravity on that object
This path followed by the object is the trajectory
