Cathartics
medication that promotes bowel movement or to control diarrhea
Chyme
mixing of food and digestive juices
Clostridium Difficile (C. diff)
causative agent of diarrhea, acquired from antibiotic therapy that causes an overgrowth of C. difficile or direct contact with C. difficile organism, only hand hygiene with soap and water is effective for removal of these spores
Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT)
a diagnostic test used to examine stool samples for traces of non visible blood, no dietary restrictions
Fecal Occult Blood test (FOBT)
measures microscopic amounts of blood in feces, useful screening for colon cancer
Flatulence
common cause of abdominal fullness, pain, and cramping; causes abdominal distention and severe sharp pain if intestinal motility is reduced
Hemorrhoid
Swollen or inflamed veins in the rectum and anus that causes discomfort and bleeding
Ileus
Any surgery that involves direct manipulation of the bowel temporarily stopping peristalsis
