Unit 2: Chapter 31 Flashcards
Absorption
when medication molecules pass into the blood from the site of medication administration
Adverse Effects
undesired, unintended and often unpredictable responses to medication
Anaphylactic reactions
sudden constriction of bronchial muscles, edema of the pharynx and larynx, severe wheezing, shortness of breath
idiosyncratic reaction
uncommon, unexpected, individual medication response thought to result from a genetic predisposition
Instillation
inserting medication drop by drop
(ex: ear or eye drops)
Intraarticular
injection of medication into a joint
Intracardiac
injection of medication directly in cardiac tissue
Irrigation
Flushing or cleansing of a wound with water or other fluids
Medication Interaction
one medication modifies the action of another
Pharmacokinetics
study of how medications enter the body, reach their side of action, metabolize, and exit the body
Synergistic Effect
when two medications are combined the effect is greater than the effect of the medications when given separately
Why do we use the Z-track method?
prevents leakage of medication into subcutaneous tissues, seals medication into muscle, and minimizes irritation
